Showing Versus Telling

An advantage of using the quest plot device discussed in Step 2 is that you can “show” rather than “tell” when it comes to describing your characters. During their journey, your characters will reveal their personalities if you have chosen the right tasks for them to perform. So rather than having to say, “Harry is a very considerate and brave boy,” Rowling can demonstrate that he is through his actions. You can see this when Harry helps Viktor Krum save Hermione and rescues Fleur Delacour’s sister during the underwater challenge in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Also, Harry’s actions in the challenge show that he tends to act impulsively because he doesn’t stop to remember that Dumbledore would never let the hostages drown. After the challenge is over, Harry scolds himself:
